Steelers’ Ward would like to see Usain bolt to NFL

LATROBE, Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward would love to see if Usain Bolt could make it as an NFL wide receiver.

After Bolt ran a world record-setting 9.58 seconds in the 100-meter dash on Sunday, Ward began wondering what kind of downfield threat he would be.

“In this game, you have to have great hips and great footwork to get in and out of routes. You can take a fast guy like a Bolt, he might be able to run only one way,” Ward said Monday. “He has to stop and turn. For me, I’ll take a guy with quickness and great route-running ability over speed. But you can’t teach speed. I’d love to have his speed.”

Hall of Fame wide receiver Bob Hayes made the most successful move from track to football, and players such as Willie Gault and Renaldo Nehemiah followed him before track stars earned what they can today.

There would be no financial incentive for Bolt to turn down the guaranteed millions he already makes to attempt a football career.

“But I’d still like to see him try out for football,” Ward said.
