KOLKATA - Fast bowling legend Wasim Akram has questioned the rationale for keeping Younis Khan out of the captaincy of the Pakistan cricket team.

“It’s still a big mystery to me that Younis Khan isn’t the captain of the side,” Akram said on his arrival here for a week-long camp of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Younis was forced to step down from captaincy in the run-up to the Australia tour after a poor batting display.

Akram also stood firm behind wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, who let go four vital chances in the Sydney Test where Pakistan turned victory to defeat.

“He’s a good cricketer. He should not be criticised for what happened in that match. He doesn’t deserve that,” Akram said.

He added that he was looking forward to his stint with the KKR, led by Sourav Ganguly and coached by Dav Whatmore.
