Organizers: Attack on Togo team won’t impact WCup

JOHANNESBURG — World Cup organizers are confident the fatal bus attack on the Togo team at the African Cup of Nations in Angola will not affect this year’s tournament in South Africa.

Up to three people are reported to have died and several more were injured when gunmen opened fire on the Togo team bus Friday.

The 32-team World Cup begins June 11. Rich Mkhondo, media manager for World Cup organizers, said Saturday there is no link between what happened in Angola and South Africa’s preparations for the soccer showcase.

He also stressed the organization and security in Angola cannot be compared with that of South Africa just because the two countries are in the same region.
