Legendre defends NCAA title in floor exercise
WEST POINT, N.Y. — Steven Legendre of Oklahoma defended his NCAA men’s gymnastics title on floor exercise, and tied a school record with his sixth individual collegiate crown on Saturday night.
Other winners included Alex Naddour of Oklahoma on the pommel horse, Brandon Wynn of Ohio State on the rings, Eddie Penev of Stanford on vault, Ryan Lieberman of Stanford on parallel bars and Ryan McCarthy of Michigan on horizontal bar.
Legendre posted a 16.100 on floor to win the event for the third year in a row. Second-ranked Penev was runner-up with a 16.000. Chad Wiest of Illinois was third with a 15.725.
Legendre finished second in the all-around on Friday night. He failed to defend his vaulting title, placing eighth. Legendre ties U.S. Olympian Jonathan Horton with his sixth NCAA title for the Sooners.
Naddour posted the high score on pommel horse for the second consecutive night with a 15.425. Glen Ishino of California improved on his fourth-place finish of a year ago by finishing second with a 15.150. Steven Spencer of Ohio State, last year’s runner-up, placed third with a 15.125.
Wynn, the Big Ten champion and top-ranked competitor on rings, won with a 15.900. Tyler Williamson was second with a 15.150 and Tim Gentry of Stanford was third with a 15.125, improving one position from last year’s meet.
Penev was the final competitor in the vault, winning with a 16.45. Jacob Dalton of Oklahoma was second with a 16.100 and Josh Dixon of Stanford was third with a 16.050.
McCarthy also won as the last competitor on the horizontal bar. The fifth-year senior won with a 14.750, leading a 1-2-3 Michigan sweep. Ian Makowske was second with a 14.625 and Mel Anton Santander was third with a 14.475.
The freshman Lieberman won the parallel bars with a 15.100. Santander was second with a 15.050 and Corey English of Oklahoma was third with a 14.900.
