Federer upset by Montanes in Estoril semifinals

OEIRAS, Portugal — Roger Federer was knocked out of the Estoril Open semifinals on Saturday, falling 6-2, 7-6 (5) to defending champion Albert Montanes of Spain.

The top-ranked Swiss made 19 unforced errors in the first set, mostly on his backhand. He was more consistent in the second set.

Federer is six weeks away from breaking Pete Sampras’ all-time record of 286 weeks at No. 1. He lost to 40th-ranked Ernests Gulbis at the Rome Masters recently as he prepares to defend his French Open title this month.
