LINCOLN (GaeaTimes.com)- As was being anticipated, the Big 12 suffered a major blow as the University of Nebraska went on to join the Big Ten conference officially. The regents went on to vote in favor of the decision of relocating the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the Big 10 by severing its century-old tie with the Big 12. The University of Nebraska became the second team in a row to leave the Big 12 for other expanding conferences. The University of Colorado team moved to the Pacific-10 recently.

On Friday, the board of Presidents and Chancellors welcomed University of Nebraska unanimously to the Big 10 conference. According to reports, the University of Nebraska will formally become a member of the Big 10 from July 1, 2011. Though the Nebraska Cornhuskers officials have been maintaining silence over the issue for long, early on Friday they broke their silence over the matter and voiced their decision to join the Big 10. The University of Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman has said to media sources that the school’s latest decision will provide it with the stability “that the Big Twelve simply cannot offer”. The Nebraska Cornhuskers became the first team to join the Big 10 since 1990.

The move of the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the Big 10 has crippled the Big 12 as it was considered one of its important teams. The Nebraska’s move is being considered by many as one of the biggest off-season move that will change the face of the college sports to a large extent. Dan Beebe, the commissioner of the Big 12 has maintained in front of a media source that though the departures of the two “valued” teams have been disappointing, it would try to hold on to its rest of the ten members.
