Germany leads Australia 2-0 after 60 minutes
DURBAN, South Africa — Germany held onto a 2-0 lead against 10-man Australia after 60 minutes of their World Cup match Sunday following first-half goals from Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose.
Australia had a promising start to the second half and had a penalty claim turned down in the 49th minute at Moses Mabidha Stadium in Durban. But Tim Cahill was sent off in the 56th minute after a tackle on Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Podolski scored with a searing left-footed shot in the eighth minute of the Group D match, after Klose and Mesut Oezil had their drives stopped by Australia’s defense. Klose rose to head in a cross after 26 minutes for his 11th World Cup goal, tying him on Germany’s all-time list in second place with Juergen Klinsmann.
