Chile leads 1-0 after 75 minutes against Honduras

NELSPRUIT, South Africa — Chile wasted a number of second-half chances against Honduras but held a 1-0 lead after 75 minutes thanks to Jean Beausejour’s first-half goal in the opening match of Group H at the World Cup.

Chile had the bulk of the possession and chances in the first half, with Beausejour breaking through in the 34th minute off Mauricio Isla’s cross.

Chile continued to dominate in the second half. Alexis Sanchez burst through on goal off Jorge Valdivia’s pass in the 62nd minute, but dragged his shot wide of the right post.

Waldo Ponce should have extended Chile’s lead with a point-blank header two minutes later, but Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares made a spectacular save.
