South Africa and Uruguay 0-0 after 30 minutes
PRETORIA, South Africa — Diego Forlan’s stunning long-range strike gave Uruguay a 1-0 lead through 30 minutes of its World Cup match against South Africa at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The striker’s 25-yard shot appeared to clip Aaron Mokoena before dipping under the crossbar, with goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune stranded.
South Africa playmaker Steven Pienaar picked up an early yellow card as Bafana Bafana were on the defensive in the early going. Pienaar was penalized after charging out of the defensive wall to block Forlan’s free kick with his arm in the sixth minute.
