Spain, Switzerland at 0-0 at halftime in WCup
DURBAN, South Africa — Spain struggled to break through Switzerland’s defense and the two teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0 in their World Cup match Wednesday.
Spain possessed the ball nearly two-thirds of the half and had several chances to take the lead but couldn’t convert.
Gerard Pique had the best opportunity in the 24th minute when Andres Iniesta’s pass found him. The Spain defender cut past a Swiss player before the goalkeeper smothered his shot. David Silva and Iniesta also had shots saved by Switzerland keeper Diego Benaglio.
Switzerland had one long-range shot that was easily saved by Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas. Switzerland defender Philippe Senderos was substituted because of an injury in the 36th.
Spain and Switzerland are the last teams to open at the tournament.
