Nigeria takes 1-0 lead over Greece
BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa — Kalu Uche scored to give Nigeria an early 1-0 lead against Greece in their Group B match at the World Cup.
Uche curled in a free kick after a tentative start to the game. The teams split possession early as play was concentrated in the midfield, and neither side was able to create any previous scoring opportunities at Free State Stadium until Uche’s shot fooled goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas.
Neither Greece nor Nigeria can afford to lose Thursday’s match after dropping their World Cup openers. The Nigerians lost to Argentina 1-0, while the Greeks fell to South Korea 2-0.
