Ghana and Australia 1-1 after 75 minutes
RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Ghana and 10-man Australia were both desperately seeking a go-ahead goal but remained tied 1-1 after 75 minutes of their World Cup match Saturday.
Kwadwo Asamoah and Asamoah Gyan tried their luck from long range early in the second half, with Gyan’s shot bringing a good block from goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
Australia coach Pim Verbeek brought on Scott Chipperfield at 66 minutes and he headed just over the bar with his first touch. Soon after, Luke Wilkshire had a shot saved from close range and another replacement, Josh Kennedy, fluffed the rebound.
Gyan came close at the other end, having a clear shot but missing wide.
Australia scored on Brett Holman’s goal after 11 minutes, but the Aussies’ fortunes turned after Harry Kewell was ejected for a hand ball at the goalline in the 25th.
Gyan converted his second penalty of the tournament to make it 1-1.
