Rogge to discuss possible SAfrican Olympic bid
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — IOC president Jacques Rogge will discuss the possibility of a South African bid for the Olympics when he meets with South African President Jacob Zuma next month.
Rogge says he will meet with Zuma in Johannesburg ahead of the World Cup final on July 11. South Africa is the first African country to host the soccer showcase.
The Olympics have been never been held in Africa.
Rogge said Wednesday that Cape Town mounted a “credible” bid for the 2004 Olympics, finishing third in a vote won by Athens in 1997.
He says “it’s always good news to see that a country like South Africa wants to bid.”
Rogge says he will “definitely take this up” with Zuma.
