Soccer, anyone? World Cup fever at Wimbledon as England, US win key matches in South Africa

World Cup matches consume Wimbledon on Wednesday

WIMBLEDON, England — Tennis is sharing the stage with soccer at Wimbledon, where fans and players at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament have been keeping track of key victories by England and the U.S. at the World Cup.

During the third set of Andy Roddick’s match against Michael Llodra on Centre Court Wednesday, cries from fans of “Come on, Andy!” were followed by a shout of “Come on, England!”

Later, moments after Jermain Defoe scored for England against Slovenia, a spectator shouted, “England, 1-nil!”

When Roddick finished his victory Wednesday, he pantomimed kicking a ball, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Later, when he heard the U.S. had scored late in its World Cup game against Algeria, Roddick yelled, “Yes!” and clapped.
