Ghana leads US 1-0 after 15 minutes
RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Kevin-Prince Boateng has given Ghana a 1-0 lead against the United States in their World Cup second-round match.
Boateng struck a low shot past U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard in the 5th minute after racing through unchallenged from the halfway line.
It was Ghana’s first goal from open play in South Africa, with Asamoah Gyan scoring the previous two goals from the penalty spot.
Just before Ghana scored, Clint Dempsey hit a low shot that lacked power directly at Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson.
The winner of the match at Royal Bafokeng Stadium will meet Uruguay at Johannesburg’s Soccer City in a quarterfinal on Friday.
Ghana is the only one of six African teams still in the tournament.
