Ghana leads US 1-0 after 30 minutes
RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Kevin-Prince Boateng has given Ghana a 1-0 lead against the United States in their World Cup second-round match.
U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard was beaten at the near post by Boateng’s low shot in the 5th minute. The Ghana midfielder shot from the edge of the area after racing through unchallenged from the halfway line, where Ricardo Clark lost possession.
It was Ghana’s first goal from open play in South Africa, with Asamoah Gyan scoring the previous two goals from the penalty spot.
If the U.S. overturns the 1-0 deficit, defender Steve Cherundolo will be suspended for Friday’s quarterfinal against Uruguay after getting a yellow card for fouling Andre Ayew.
Ghana is the only African team remaining in the World Cup.
