Capello says he won’t resign after England’s heavy defeat

BLOEMFONTEIN - Fabio Capello refused to resign as England coach Sunday but his future remains uncertain after a 4-1 hammering by Germany that saw his side crash out of the World Cup at the Round of 16 stage.

The Italian told a post-match press conference at the Free State stadium in Bloemfontein that he first wants to discuss the issue with FA international committee chairman Sir Dave Richards before making any decision.

“I want to speak with the chairman to decide my future,” Capello said. “I don’t know if he has confidence in me or not.”

Capello recently extended his deal with England until after Euro 2012 and had a clause removed from his contract that would have allowed either party to terminate the contract after the World Cup.

He will now meet with Richards when the team returns home.

“I speak when I come back to London,” he said. “I have time to decide.”

However, the Italian made clear that, as things stood, he had no intention of resigning from his post.

“Resign? No, absolutely not,” he replied when asked whether he was considering walking away.

Capello accepted some of the blame for England’s heaviest ever World Cup but saved most of his ire for the match officials, who failed to spot that Frank Lampard’s shot clearly crossed the line with the score at 2-1, describing the error as “incredible”.

“We played with five referees who can’t decide if it was a goal or not. The game would be different after this goal,” he said. “From the bench I saw the ball go over the line.”
