Germany leads England 2-1 after 60 minutes
BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa — Goals from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski have given Germany a 2-1 lead over England after 60 minutes of their World Cup second-round match.
Matthew Upson pulled a goal back in the 37th minute, heading in a cross from Steven Gerrard to make it 2-1. Frank Lampard had a shot go off the crossbar and apparently over the goal line in the 38th — TV replays seemed to indicate that his lofted shot bounced a foot or more beyond the line — but Uruguay referee Jorge Larrionda motioned for play to continue.
Lampard nearly scored again in the 52nd, hitting a free kick off the crossbar.
Klose opened the scoring, outmuscling Upson to a bouncing ball off a goal kick to shoot past England goalkeeper David James in the 20th minute. Podolski shot the ball between James’ legs 12 minutes later.
