Ghana, Uruguay even at 1-1 at end of regulation
JOHANNESBURG — Diego Forlan scored in the 55th minute to send Friday’s World Cup quarterfinal match between Uruguay and Ghana to extra time tied 1-1.
Ghana is bidding to be the first African nation ever to reach the World Cup semifinals, while two-time champion Uruguay is aiming to progress to the last four for the first time since 1970.
Sulley Muntari gave Ghana a 1-0 lead with a curling, 35-yard left-footed shot seconds before halftime at Soccer City. But Forlan leveled with a perfect free kick from 20 yards that curled in from the left and just over Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson’s outstretched hand.
