Ghana, Uruguay tied 1-1 midway through extra-time
JOHANNESBURG — Ghana and Uruguay are tied 1-1 after the first extra-time period in their World Cup quarterfinals match at Soccer City.
Ghana aims to be the first African nation ever to reach the semifinals, while two-time champion Uruguay last made the final four in 1970. The winner plays the Netherlands.
Extra-time play is scrappy after exciting action in regulation.
Sulley Muntari gave Ghana a 1-0 lead in first-half injury time with a curling, 35-yard left-footed shot.
Diego Forlan equalized in the 55th minute with a free kick from 20 yards that curled in from the left.
