CAPE TOWN - German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the nation’s 4-0 World Cup football quarter-final demolition of Argentina Saturday “overwhelming” and “a dream.”

Speaking to ZDF television from Cape Town, where she attended the game, Merkel said “Germany has done something wonderful today.”

“It was overwhelming. This is a dream, just a dream. This is a young team but the way they played was very good. They did not allow Argentina much space,” she said.

Merkel sat next to South African President Jacob Zuma and jumped up in joy as goals from Miroslav Klose (2), Thomas Mueller and Arne Friedrich sent Diego Maradona’s Argentina packing.

But Merkel also said she wasn’t fully convinced about victory until Klose netted the final goal in the 89th minute.
