Djokovic tops Cilic to propel Serbia past Croatia

SPLIT, Croatia — Serbia has beaten rival Croatia to reach the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time, advancing on Novak Djokovic’s 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marin Cilic.

The win Sunday gave Serbia a 3-1 lead against in the best-of-five series.

Serbia will play the Czech Republic in the semifinals.

Serbia took a 2-1 lead with its doubles victory on Saturday. In the opening singles Friday, Djokovic beat Ivan Ljubicic, while Cilic defeated Viktor Troicki.

The two countries, formerly part of Yugoslavia, have never met before in the Davis Cup. Croatia won the competition in 2005 and played in the last semifinals.
