Ex-UM coach Carr stepping down as associate AD

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Lloyd Carr, who led Michigan to the national football championship in 1997 and five Big ten titles, is stepping down as the Wolverines’ associate athletic director Sept. 1.

Carr, 64, coached Michigan’s football team in 1995-2008. His teams had a record of 122-40 (81-23 Big Ten).

“I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity to assist two great coaches here,” Carr said Tuesday. “Most of all, I am thankful for the young men I coached and for all the memories I have from my time at Michigan.”

He played football at Missouri and Northern Michigan and was an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan in 1976-77 and Illinois in 1978-79. Carr came to Michigan in 1980 as an assistant to head coach Bo Schembechler, and remained as an aide under Gary Moeller.

Carr stepped down as coach in 2008, making way for Rich Rodriguez.

“Lloyd Carr’s legacy is an impressive and important part of Michigan’s rich history and tradition of excellence in football,” university president Mary Sue Coleman said. “He has served the university as well through his advocacy and passion for a number of philanthropic causes.”

Athletic director Dave Brandon called Carr a “man of integrity” with a deep love for student athletes and the university.
