KOLKATA - Afro-Aussie central defender Okwy Okonkwo Diamondstar flew into the city Monday to try out for city soccer giants Mohun Bagan.

Okwy, an Africa-born Australian citizen, immediately left for the north Bengal town of Siliguri by a connecting flight to join the rest of the team in the club’s ongoing residential camp.

“He has reached Siliguri and also went to the ground in the afternoon. He will join practice tomorrow (Tuesday) or the day after (Wednesday) depending on his state of fitness after the long journey,” Mohun Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra told IANS.

Okwy now plays for an Australian football club, the Western Knights Soccer Club, which is presently second in the Football West State League Premier Division in Perth (Western Australia). If selected, Okwy will be the fourth foreigner in the Mohun Bagan squad for the 2010-2011 football season.

Earlier Okwy turned out for Persis Solo, an Indonesian football team based in Solo (Surakarta), Central Java, which plays in the country’s premier division in the central region.
