BEIJING - China will ban the sale of any type of knives during the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November to prevent mental patients from creating nuisance.

Police in Guangzhou have started a campaign to restrict sales of cutting tools during the Asian Games including kitchen knives, knives for any artistic work, the Global Times reported.

People who wish to buy knives during the games will have to show proof of identity and are only allowed to buy tools at designated places authorised by the public security bureau.

Even authorised sellers have been forbidden to sell knives to “people with mental disease” and individuals under the age of 18.

Guangzhou will host the Asian Games from Nov 12 to 27.
