Griffin, Hernandez lead Massachusetts to a 26-21 win against Stony Brook

UMass beats Stony Brook 26-21

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — John Griffin ran for 132 yards and a touchdown and Jonathan Hernandez scored twice to lead Massachusetts to a 26-21 win over Stony Brook on Saturday night.

The Minutemen (3-1) were able to hold off Stony Brook, which took a 21-20 lead when Michael Coulter connected with Jordan Gush on a 4-yard touchdown with 5:10 left in the third quarter.

But Griffin, who finished with 23 carries, scored from 1 yard away with 10:52 left to put Massachusetts ahead 26-21. Tyler Holmes intercepted a pass with 1:08 left to seal the victory.

Kyle Havens completed 19 of 30 passes for 255 yards and threw two interceptions for the Minutemen. Anthony Nelson caught six passes for 97 yards, while Julian Talley got 76 yards on five catches.

Coulter threw for 139 yards for the Seawolves (1-3). Edwin Gowins led Stony Brook with 101 yards rushing and one touchdown.
