NEW DELHI - A ‘multi-layered’ and ‘multi-dimensional’ security cover is in place in Delhi for the Commonwealth Games with around 29,000 policemen deployed in and around the Games venues, Delhi Police chief Y.S. Dadwal said Saturday.

In addition, there will be 195 companies of para-military forces along with the National Security Guard ensuring security at the venues, Dadwal said.

We also have the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team which is armed with sophisticated weapons and ready to handle any situation, Dadwal told reporters.

According to the commissioner, the host city has not received any threat but all these measures will help the security agencies in facing any challenge should it emerge.

Around 3,000 CCTV cameras have also been installed in and around the Games venues, he added.

The mega-sporting event kicks off in the capital Sunday with the opening ceremony to be held at the revamped Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. Some 7,000 athletes and officials from 71 countries and territories are expected for the Games, India’s biggest sporting event since the 1982 Asian Games.
