NEW DELHI - England edged past South Africa 1-0 to annex the bronze medal in the womens hockey competition of the Commonwealth Games here Wednesday.

The only goal of the match came in the 13th minute when Georgie Twigg flicked home a Crista Cullen centre from the right.

The South Africans, who yet again depended largely on veteran Pietie Coetzee, paid the penalty for missing chances, especially in the second-half when England turned defensive.

Apart from the goal, England had few chances and the Proteas goalkeeper Vuyisanani Mangisa did a fine job to keep out the balls and her team afloat.

England’s bronze medal finish equaled their feat in 1998 Games when hockey was introduced while the South Africans will again return home empty-handed as they had in 2002 (4th) and 2006 (8th).
