Delhi discusses setting up of Sports Academy

NEW DELHI - The Delhi Cabinet Monday discussed a proposal to set up a Sports Academy in the capital to popularise sports culture and utilise the stadiums after the Commonwealth Games.

According to a source, the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit laid stress on having the Sports Academy here on the lines of the Hindi Academy and Urdu Academy which were meant for the promotion of these languages.

It was discussed that through the plan, the Delhi stadiums — Thyagraja (netball), Chhatrasal (track and field training), Talkatora (boxing) and Ludlow Castle (wrestling training) — which were renovated ahead of the Oct 3-14 Games will also be utilised.

The source said sports, to be played in these stadiums, will be selected and the names of the coaches also finalised before setting up the Academy.
