Somdev, Sania to lead India’s challenge in Asian Games tennis

NEW DELHI - Commonwealth Games medallists Somdev Devvarman and Sania Mirza will lead India’s challenge in the men’s and women’s singles event in the Nov 12-27 Asian Games.

Commonwealth Games singles gold medallist Somdev along with Vishnu Vardhan, Karan Rastogi and Sanam Singh is part of the six-member men’s team while Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna’s participation depends on their qualification for the World Tour Finals in London.

Leander Paes recently qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals after his title win in Shanghai Masters last week.

Sanam’s selection depends on the approval by his University of Virginia, said the All India Tennis Association in a press statement.

Commonwealth Games singles silver medallist Sania Mirza will spearhead the six-member women’s team which also includes Poojashree Venkatesha, Nirupama Sanjeev, Rushmi Chakravarthi, and Tara Iyer.

Shivika Burman is the new face in the team while Tara Iyer, who was in the reserve for the Commonwealth Games, has also been named in the squad.
