Hauritz, Australia’s best hope of regaining Ashes: Jenner
By ANITuesday, December 7, 2010
SYDNEY - Australia’s best hope of regaining the Ashes is to recall off-spinner Nathan Hauritz for next week’s third Ashes Test in Perth, according to Shane Warne’s mentor Terry Jenner.
Warne’s one-time mentor, who took 24 wickets in nine Tests from 1970-75, believes the selectors erred by dumping Hauritz in favour of Xavier Doherty for the first two Tests.
Tasmanian spinner Doherty, 28, took two wickets in Brisbane, but conceded more than a run a ball for his sole wicket in Adelaide, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Hauritz, 29, has 63 Test wickets at 34.98, but his record on home soil - 38 wickets in nine Tests at 29 - is more impressive.
“Xavier isn’t ready for Test cricket. Hauritz should be picked for Perth,” Jenner said.
“Haury bowls well for Australia in home Tests. He’s the best spin option for the rest of the series,” he said.
Jenner, 66, suffered a heart attack in England in April, and doctors have given him three to six months to live. (ANI)
