MELBOURNE - Australian and England cricketers taking part in the Ashes series Down Under are backing Ricky Ponting to play in the Boxing Day Test that starts this Sunday here, despite a fractured little finger.

Australian pacer Peter Siddle said Ponting is guaranteed to play, while England’s Kevin Pietersen said: “I’ve played with broken fingers. You just block them out with injections. I played in a series against Sri Lanka with a broken small finger. I don’t see it to be a problem.”

“He said he’s holding the bat fine so he’s ready to go,” The Age quoted Siddle, as saying of Ponting.

He added: “It doesn’t matter how sore you are, you never want to miss a Boxing Day Test. I think everyone will definitely be 100 per cent fit for that one.” (ANI)
