Gambhir heads million dollar cricketers’ list at IPL auction

BANGALORE - India’s opening batsman Gautam Gambhir led the list of 12 cricketers, who were sold for more than a million dollars on the first day of the players’ auction for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here Saturday.
Gambhir, who had a base price of $200,000, fetched a record $2.4 millions from Kolkata Knight Riders. Gambhir was bought for $725,000 by Delhi Daredevils in the first edition of the IPL in 2008.
Yusuf Pathan (Knight Riders) and Robin Uthappa (Pune Warriors) went laughing to the bank as they were bought for $2.1 million each. Yusuf’s younger brother Irfan, who is not even among the 30 probables for the World Cup, was bought by Daredevils for $1.9 million.
Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was the most sought after overseas cricketer as he was sold to Kochi for $1.5 million.
