IPL auction a crime against cricket: Congress leader

NEW DELHI - Calling the recent auction of players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) “a crime against the great game (of cricket)”, a Congress leader from Maharashtra has written to President Pratibha Patil questioning the legality of the auction process.
In his letter, Guru Nair, vice-chairman of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee’s cultural cell, said the auction raised several questions like if it is “permissible to purchase a cricket player in India in foreign currency” and whether “Indian law permits the auction of a human being, personal skills or services of an individual”.
He also sought to know whether it is binding that the game should be played in India if the auction is held in the country, and if the IPL auction is held within the existing Indian laws or any new legislation has been enacted for the purpose.
“Here is somebody (cricket players) sold and somebody unsold. This is actually a crime against the nation’s heritage. They (the organisers) should be booked for treason,” Nair said in his letter.
