KOLKATA - Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) won a double crown, retaining their titles in the men’s and women’s team events at the 72nd Senior National Table Tennis Championships here Thursday.
Hosts West Bengal finished runners up in both the categories at the Netaji Indoor Stadium.
PSPB men edged past West Bengal 3-2 while their women’s team accounted for the hosts 3-1 in the finals.
In the men’s title clash, PSPB began on the wrong note with seasoned campaigner Soumayadeep Roy going down to Anirban Nandi. Roy, who was expected to carry a big load in the absence of star campaigner Achanta Sharath Kamal, also lost his other match later in the day to West Bengal’s Sourav Saha.
However, with the two teams tied 2-2, Sourav Chakraborty grabbed the decider by prevailing over Nandi in a thrilling five setter 13-15, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 to carry PSPB to a title finish.
The women’s title cash saw West Bengal’s Anindita Chakraborty upset PSPB’s Madhurika Parkar, but that was all the success that the hosts had. With Mouma winning both her matches, PSPB got their 12th back-to-back title.
