MELBOURNE - World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki defeated World No.29 Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-3, to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday.

Wozniacki, playing her first Grand Slam as the World No.1, is yet to win one of tennis’ marquee events.

The 20-year-old can hold onto the No.1 ranking by reaching the semi-finals at Melbourne Park, the Age reports.

Maria Sharapova overcame an early wobble to secure her place in the fourth round.

The 2008 champion was forced to fight all the way before finally toppling Julia Goerges 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

French Open champion Francesca Schiavone also moved on, beating Monica Niculescu 6-0, 7-6 (7-2).

Former World No.1 Justine Henin was however eliminated in the third round, losing 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), to Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The winner of the 2004 US and 2009 French championships, Kuznetsova had ended 2009 as the third-ranked player in the world only to slip to 27th at the start of this year. (ANI)
