Redskins release 10-year veteran tackle Jon Jansen

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins have released veteran right tackle Jon Jansen, a fixture on the team’s offensive line for much of the last decade.

Jansen was cut Friday after a meeting with owner Dan Snyder, front office chief Vinny Cerrato and coach Jim Zorn. The 33-year-old lineman started 122 games for the Redskins, but age and injuries were starting to take their toll, and he was expected to be an expensive backup this year.

Jansen was a second-round draft pick from Michigan in 1999. Nicknamed “Rock” for his reliability and leadership, he didn’t miss a game over his first five seasons.

A ruptured Achilles’ tendon cost him the 2004 season, and a gruesome ankle injury sidelined him in 2007.
