Edwards leads The Citadel past Samford 28-16
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Tommy Edwards threw two second-half touchdown passes in his collegiate debut to lead The Citadel to a 28-16 victory over Samford on Saturday.
Edwards, a freshman walk-on, replaced injured starter Miguel Starks late in the second quarter and led the Bulldogs (4-4, 2-3 Southern Conference) to 28 consecutive points and a 28-10 lead with 2:41 remaining.
Edwards threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Van Dyke Jones with 7:29 left in the third quarter and then hit Alex Sellars on an 11-yard pass that gave The Citadel a 14-10 lead with 10:06 on the clock. Edwards finished 10-for-20 for 141 yards.
Terrell Dallas added a 5-yard touchdown and Cortez Allen returned an interception 82 yards for the Bulldogs’ other scores. It was Allen’s second interception of the game.
Dustin Taliaferro threw for 130 yards and Connor Lowery added 94 yards passing and a touchdown for Samford (3-5, 1-4).
