Redskins’ RB Betts, G Rinehart out for the season
ASHBURN, Va. — Running back Ladell Betts and guard Chad Rinehart are done for the season for the battered Washington Redskins.
Coach Jim Zorn said Monday that Betts has damage to both the ACL and MCL in the left knee. Rinehart had surgery to repair a broken right leg.
Zorn said both will be placed on injured reserve.
Betts and Rinehart were hurt in Sunday’s 7-6 loss to Dallas — and both were subbing for injured players.
Betts was playing for Clinton Portis, who is sidelined with a concussion. Zorn said Portis will miss his third straight game next week against Philadelphia and could sit out the following week as well.
Third-string running back Rock Cartwright will start against the Eagles, and Zorn said the Redskins plan to bring back Marcus Mason, who was cut earlier this season, to restore some depth to the position.
Rinehart becomes the third offensive lineman to go on injured reserve, joining Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas. With Mike Williams recovering from a sprained ankle, undrafted rookie Edwin Williams could become the 10th Redskins offensive lineman to start a game this season.
Also headed to injured reserve is fullback Eddie Williams, who broke his leg during practice on Friday. The rookie did not play this season.
Meanwhile, doctors examining Chris Cooley said the tight end will have to wear a boot for another 10 days as he recovers from a broken right ankle. Zorn said the new timetable could make Cooley a candidate for IR.
Zorn said cornerback DeAngelo Hall sprained a knee against Dallas and could miss the Eagles game. The coach said defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who missed the Dallas game with a sprained ankle, continues to work on the treadmill and might be able to return for the trip to Philadelphia.
