Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010: Latest highlights

Winter Olympic Games 2010 is on full swing, as records break and history’s created. On Saturday Ohno’s silver medal performance and American moguls skiier Hannah Kearney gold medal in Vancouver was watched by 26.2 million people on NBC, according to the Nielsen Co.  The neck-to-neck battle indulging roller-coaster ride of emotions in the luge singles competition came to a close Sunday, leaving the audience gasping for breath. As U.S dominates the medal tally, Europeans are pulling out all the stops. With still an array of medal events to come we bring you some exclusive highlights of the major events in Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010.

Winter Olympics 2010 highlights

  • France’s Vincent Jay won the gold medal on his debut in men’s biathlon 10-kilometer sprint. Jay shot cleanly and quickly to finish in 24 minutes, 7.8 seconds, beating Norwegian silver medalist Emil Hegle Svendsen by 12.2 seconds.
  • Felix Loch, 20-year old German, became the youngest gold medalist to win the Whistler Sliding. Loch finished his four heats in 3 minutes, 13.085 seconds, well ahead of teammate David Moeller. Two times Olympic champion (2002 and 2006 ), Italy’s Armin Zoeggeler held the third spot.
  • Short track speed skater J.R. Celski made stunning come back with a bronze, five months after being down with serious injuries in U.S Olympics trial. His Olympic teammate Apolo Ohno grabbed the silver, while Lee Jung-Su of South Korea took the gold medal.
  • American Hannah Kearney was the first to win a gold medal for country in women’s moguls skiing. Kearney won by a big margin scoring 26.63 points to win by .94. Her teammate Shannon Bahrke occupied the third spot.
  • France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis won the Olympic gold in the Nordic combined normal hill event.  Johnny Spillane won the silver to become the first American to win the event dominated by Europeans. Italy’s Alessandro Pittin won the bronze, finishing eight-tenths of a second behind Chappuis.
  • U.S. women beat China 12-1 in hockey with American striker Jenny Potter scoring three goals in 22 minutes. American Meghan Duggan scored twice to seal the fate of Chinese team.
  • Swiss Simon Ammann better known for his resemblance to the fictional wizard Harry Potter won the ski jumping gold.
