Source: No interest in McNabb deal

ST. LOUIS — Reports that the St. Louis Rams are trying to acquire Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb are untrue, according to a person familiar with the team’s plans.

Media outlets in Philadelphia on Wednesday reported the Rams had offered a second-round draft pick and safety Oshiomoghe Atogwe for McNabb. The source told The AP that the reports were unfounded.

Atogwe is coming off shoulder surgery and ended the season on injured reserve, and would have to sign a tender offer before the Rams could trade him. He had made 60 consecutive starts and was the team’s second-leading tackler before getting hurt in early December.

The Rams have interest in taking Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the first pick of the draft after going 1-15 with Marc Bulger, the starter since 2003, and backup Kyle Boller. A.J. Feeley signed earlier this month and is the likely backup next season.

Rams general manager Billy Devaney had not returned a telephone message from The AP.

McNabb’s name has surfaced in trade rumors because the Eagles have Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick on the roster. McNabb is entering the final season of his contract and the team could be considering making a change because they haven’t won a Super Bowl with him. McNabb has led Philadelphia to five NFC championship games in 11 seasons, winning one NFC title.

Eagles coach Andy Reid has maintained throughout the offseason that McNabb will return. But rumors began swirling Wednesday after Reid said he’s listening to offers for all of his quarterbacks.

“I wouldn’t say they’re on the market,” Reid said at the owners’ meetings in Orlando, Fla. “I’d say I’m listening. I’m not saying I’m doing anything. I’m keeping my ears open, which we do on every player. This is no different.”

McNabb responded by issuing a statement saying he wants to remain in Philadelphia, but understood the quarterback situation and hoped the team made a decision soon.
