Russell shows up as Raiders open minicamp
ALAMEDA, Calif. — JaMarcus Russell has shown up at the Oakland Raiders minicamp, saying he will keep coming to work until he’s told not to.
Russell’s status with Oakland had been in question since the Raiders traded for Jason Campbell last weekend. There were reports this week that the Raiders were planning to cut the former No. 1 overall pick but he took the field with the rest of his teammates when minicamp opened Friday.
Coach Tom Cable has said there’s a competition at quarterback with Russell, Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski, Charlie Frye and Kyle Boller all in the mix.
Russell has been paid more than $36 million since the Raiders drafted him first overall in 2007. He is guaranteed $3 million more and will have a salary of $9.45 million if he makes the team this season.
