Uruguay leads Mexico 1-0 after 75 minutes

RUSTENBURG, South Africa — Luis Suarez’s first-half header gave Uruguay a 1-0 lead against Mexico, putting his team on the brink of qualifying for the next round of the World Cup after 75 minutes Tuesday.

Suarez scored from close range in the 43rd minute off a brilliant cross by Edinson Cavani.

Both Group A teams need only a draw to advance, so the pressure is on Mexico to search for an equalizer. Mexico can still go through depending on the result of the France vs. South Africa match.

Mexico nearly equalized in the 64th when defender Francisco Rodriguez headed just wide in front of goal off a cross from the right by substitute Pablo Barrera.

Uruguay had successive chances to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute, but Mexico’s goalkeeper saved one shot and another was blocked.
