Safety summit considers jockey injury database

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Horse racing industry leaders are proposing a national database to track jockey injuries and interstate sharing of horse medical records as ways to beef up safety in their sport.

The officials focused on getting states across the country to buy into safety efforts during the second day of an equine welfare and safety summit Tuesday at Keeneland.

Earlier summits helped launch a database that tracks fatal injuries to horses. The first results from that effort were announced during Monday’s opening session.

That database helped influence the new proposal calling for another database to track jockey injuries. Many members of the conference also want all racing states to sign a compact allowing for easier sharing of drug and safety rules.
