Bobby Thompson Dead At 86

NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com)- The Major League Baseball (MLB) on Monday lost another of its jewel when Bobby Thompson who gave MLB and the New York Giants one of its most cherished moments back in 1951, breathed his last. The 86-year-old former Major League Baseball player who led the New York Giants to World Series victory with his magnificent home run, that still reverberates in the baseball circle as “shot heard ’round the world”, died at his home in Savannah, Georgia, on Monday. Bobby Thompson had been in declining health for some time and his death has been caused by natural causes reportedly. The news of the death of Bobby Thompson was confirmed to media sources by the officials who are handling the funeral process of the former MLB star.
On Tuesday, a statement issued by the Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig befittingly mentioned that Bobby Thompson although has left for heavenly abode will always hold a special position in the baseball game for hitting “one of the signature home runs in baseball history”. He also added that the historical ‘The Shot Heard ‘Round the World’ shot will remain a defining moment for the game and illustrate the “timeless” quality of the national pastime.
The amazing three-run homer dubbed as “The Shot Heard Round The World” was hit by Bobby Thompson against the ace pitcher of Brooklyn Dodgers’, Ralph Branca towards the end of the ninth inning back in 1951. The shot was made at the Polo Grounds and helped the New York Giants win the World Series. In his 15 major league seasons, Bobby Thompson batted .270 with 264 career homers and 1,026 runs.
