Bethune-Cookman wins 70-10 in coach Jenkins’ debut
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Matt Johnson passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 70-10 victory in its opener over NAIA opponent Edward Waters (0-2) on Saturday.
In their first game under coach Brian Jenkins, the Wildcats of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference gained 635 total yards. Johnson carried four times for a career-best 122 yards and passed for 159 yards (9-for-11).
Bethune-Cookman led 21-0 after one quarter. Johnson opened the scoring with a 12-yard run, and Andronicus Lovette and Androse Bell scored on runs of 4 and 3 yards, respectively.
In the second quarter, Isidore Jackson caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Johnson and Jackie Wilson added a 14-yard run 8:05 before halftime for a 35-0 Wildcats lead.
Edward Waters’ first points came on the half’s final play when Jacquez Stephenson caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Turman.
