Evans leads Samford over Northwestern State 19-7
NATCHITOCHES, La. — Chris Evans rushed for 109 yards and one touchdown as Samford used a balanced attack to defeat Northwestern State 19-7 Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (1-1), coming off a season-opening 59-6 loss to Florida State, jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Samford outgained the Demons 459 yards to 215, with 239 yards rushing and 220 passing. Northwestern State had only 47 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Evans, the first Bulldogs running back to rush for at least 1,000 yards in three straight seasons, scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 7:01 left in the first half.
Cameron Yaw kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired for a 9-0 halftime lead, and added a 43-yarder in the third quarter.
Quarterback Paul Harris put the Demons (0-2) on the scoreboard with a 1-yard run with 7:32 left, capping an eight-play, 59-yard drive.
