KARACHI - The tennis duo comprising India’s Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi has climbed to the 6th spot in the men’s doubles rankings, according to the latest ATP release.
Following their entry into the finals of the US Open, Bopanna and Qureshi, often called “the Indo-Pak Express,” jumped nine places to reach number six in the team table, their highest ever world ranking, the Dawn reports.
Qureshi, who is already Pakistan’s most successful tennis player, was ranked at number 35 before the tournament started, and reached both the men’s and mixed doubles finals at the last grand slam of the year.
Bopanna and Qureshi entered their maiden final at the men’s doubles, defeating Argentina’s Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zaballos 7-6(5), 6-4 in the US Open tennis men’s doubles semi-finals.
In the men’s doubles final, they fought hard against top-seeds and world number one pair of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan but lost 7-6, 7-6.
In the mixed doubles final, Qureshi and Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic lost in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) against Bob Bryan and Liezel Huber.
Apart from being praised for their skills on court, Bopanna and Qureshi have been receiving accolades from the western media for their humanitarian goals and bringing the two countries closer. (ANI)
