Monmouth’s defense helps beat Duquesne 44-17

PITTSBURGH — Dave Ogden and Kenny Amsel each returned one of Monmouth’s six interceptions for a touchdown in a 44-17 win over Duquesne on Saturday.

Ogden made it 28-0 for the Hawks (1-3, 1-0 Northeast Conference) on a 31-yard interception return with 11:08 left in the second quarter, while Amsel’s TD return went 50 yards for the final score with 50 seconds to play.

Chris Hogan and Kendall Haley intercepted two Dukes passes each.

Monmouth, which allowed 32 points a game heading in, gave up just 240 yards of offense while compiling 440.

Bobby Giles had 95 yards on 20 carries for the Hawks, who snapped a five-game losing streak dating back to the 2009 season. Kyle Frazier added 232 yards and a touchdown on 15-for-29 passing for Monmouth.

Marty Mitchell was 10-for-18 passing with four interceptions, two touchdowns and 135 yards for Duquesne (3-2, 0-1).
