HAMILTON - Pakistan thrashed New Zealand by 10 wickets in the opening Test held at the Seddon Park in Hamilton.

It came after the Black Caps self-destructed in their second innings on day three on Sunday by being all out for just 110, Stuff.co.nz reports.

Pakistan had a simple task of scoring 19 runs to win, which opening batsman Taufeeq Umar (12 not out) and Mohammad Hafeez (nine not out) did in 3.4 overs.

Earlier, in the day, Pakistan stretched their overnight total of 235-4 to 367 to grab a first innings lead of 92 runs.

Pakistan captain Misbah ul-Haq (62) put on 149 in a fifth wicket stand with Asad Shafiq, who top-scored with 83.

Wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal (44) then added 76 with Abdur Rehman (28) for the seventh wicket.

Umar Gul scored a rapid 17 off 14 balls while Tanvir Ahmed (18) was the last man out.

New Zealand fast bowler Brent Arnel finished with figures of 4- 95. His fast bowling partners Chris Martin took 3-86 and Tim Southee 2-82.

New Zealand had made a steady start in their second-innings, reaching 33 without loss at tea.

However, the home team’s batting-order crumbled under quality bowling from the visitors in the last session, as Tim McIntosh (three) Martin Guptill (11), Ross Taylor (eight), Jesse Ryder (one) and Kane Williamson (one) were dismissed cheaply to tumble to 61-6.

Brendon McCullum was the only batsman to provide some resistance, but he was eventually caught behind by Akmal off Wahab Riaz for 35.

Captain Daniel Vettori went for three, Southee for 17, Martin for eight, while Arnel finished unbeaten on seven.
